WHAT IS A FIBREBOARD DRUM?

A fibreboard or cardboard drum is one of the most environmentally efficient and sustainable packaging product and used for the delivery of mass freight. It is manufactured from kraft fibre from sustainable forest and requires only a fraction of energy to produce compared with other materials. Thus, fibreboard drums are the most cost-effective and efficient packaging types available on the market today.

Fibre drums are ideal for carrying food or other hygienic products and are suitable for a wide range of chemical, pastes and solid products. Fibreboard drums can be used for the transportation of unsafe products if issued with a UN Certification.

If you think that those drums are not suitable for the storage of liquids, then you are wrong. There are manufacturers that make use of technologies to deliver very stable packaging that is ideal for liquid use. You can even store those fibreboard drums outside.

Apart from the sustainable production, packaging paper drums can also be reused or recycled which makes them one of the best options available alongside the various steel, plastic and composite industrial packaging. However, it is not common practice around the world to reuse fibreboard drums.

Whether that packaging type is reused is simply subject to the market conditions and whether there is a reuse system or market to enable the end user to reuse the fibreboard drum. This is the case in the U.S. where reconditioners clean and refurbish those packaging containers and enable the reuse to the end user.

In Europe, the fibreboard drums are more likely to be recycled as the costs and ease for destruction for materials recycling are low. Other reasons are of course the high standards for safety and hygiene for pharma and chemical products which are not suitable for refurbished packaging.
